As a first year teacher who is teaching double blocked classes, it is vital for me to stay organized and to keep students engaged for the 100 minutes a day that they are in my classroom. Making sure I stay organized requires the necessities. The organizational trays and hanging wall organizer will go near my desk so I can keep all of my students' papers in an exact place. The progress tracking charts and stickers will be helpful for me to keep track of the objectives my students' achieve and for my students to visualize their own progress. The necessities also include a stapler, pens, pencils, and pencil sharpener; materials that my students ask to use daily that I, unfortunately, have to tell them I do not have.
It's the little things within a classroom that can make a big difference. Acquiring the necessities will help my classroom run more smoothly. In addition, having students engaged for those 100 minutes demands utilizing hands on activities, a variety of resources, and joy!
This includes one of my students' favorite things in the classroom: the whiteboard! Coordinate grid whiteboards, whiteboard dry erasers, and whiteboard dry erase markers for each student opens the door for competition games (like Kahoot, Jeopardy, etc.) and opportunities to visualize math graphs, unit rates, and much more! I also included colored pencils, fraction flashcards and square colored tiles for my English Language Learners who heavily rely on visual and hands-on math concepts.
The physical environment, as well as having resources for the variety of learning styles in my classroom, will actively engage and interest my students in learning math and applying their knowledge. These students deserve a creative and engaging class environment, and with these supplies they will be able to experience the class they deserve.
