iPads to Enhance Coding Skills
Funded Sep 24, 2018Your generous donation of the iPads have made a positive impact on the learning experience of the students in Science class. The students have had the opportunity of interacting with and programming the Dash robots. In order for the robots to move in a desired direction, the students must write the programs using a Blockly application. They have been prompted with challenges of getting the Dash robot moving from a "Start" position and stopping on a "Finish" position. The high level of engagement and positive interaction among peers has been a pleasure to witness and experience in my class.
My students have felt a great sense of accomplishment in completing these tasks which pushes them to try harder and challenge themselves. This demonstration of perseverance doesn't always come naturally in Math, Reading, or Writing and often causes students to shut down and become frustrated. When working with the Dash robots, it takes numerous attempts, corrections, adjustments, and peer collaboration before they create the correct program to have Dash arrive at the "Finish" position. I have students who have a wide range of academic ability levels, as well as English Language Learners, working together and providing their own input and ideas towards accomplishing the task. The importance of this peer collaboration is how my lower level students don't ever seem intimidated and can confidently contribute input without fear.
I could not be more appreciative of the iPads knowing how they have positively impacted my students. I have noticed an increase of engagement in Science class along with students who have a growing interest in programming and coding. I will continue to promote this growing interest utilizing the iPads and Dash robots throughout the remainder of the school year so my students are better prepared for this technologically driven world. Again, thank you so much for this generous donation!”
With gratitude,
Mr. Clemens
