Students work best when they are given opportunities to collaborate with one another. One of the best ways we've found to do this is by using round activity tables and flexible seating instead of standard desks. Students are able to learn off of one another and develop a strong sense of community in all subject areas as they sit together at a table. Our goal with the round activity tables is to work in small groups, especially during reading and math centers. Students will be able to share work, supplies, and save space with the tables instead of desks. A strong opportunity exists for maximizing learning and creating meaningful experiences by rethinking the classroom experience. Large octagon tables, comfortable chairs, yoga mats, and sofas can all contribute to student choice and the chance to encourage collaboration. The tables are large enough for 8 students to fit. The students at a table can work together for group activities including hands-on Science experiments. Students will also have a chance to be grouped according to levels and strengths, making it beneficial to all. My students will develop both academically and socially with the addition of tables to the classroom. The best part of this project is these students will benefit from it for three years. We will be looping together through Kindergarten, First, and Second grade. The tables will adjust to students as they grow and give the classroom enough space. This makes our bond even more special and encourages us to promote a sense of family as we continue to work together.
