Communication is not always verbal in nature. The child may point at things, make sounds or look towards an item. Setting up situations for students to communicate intentionally starts with requesting. Each child has his or her own likes and dislikes. Making choices include placing his or her favorite items within view but out of reach. By placing reinforcing items out of reach, (in the cabinets) allows the children multiple opportunities to ask for a desired object. Individuals with autism are not always motivated by the same strategies as other students. Sometimes we have to be detectives to figure it out. Reinforcers motivate children to learn new skills.
