  • Building Independent Readers

    Funded Dec 9, 2024

As a veteran teacher, I have always encouraged my students at all grade levels to read inside and outside of the classroom. In the academic setting, students are required to read across all content areas. When students are able to read fluently, they are better able to comprehend what they are reading which leads to better academic performance across all content areas.

Your contribution will give me the opportunity to instill a love of reading in my students. I am glad to be able to introduce my students to books with main characters that are more relatable to them. When students are better able to see themselves in the characters they are reading about, they are able to connect more with the story. They become more interested in what they are reading and this interest encourages them to want to read more of the same types of books with similar story elements.

Thanks to your support, these books will find their way into the hands of eager learners and readers. Your contribution will help to change lives! Thank you for empowering young minds and making a meaningful impact on the lives of our future.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tezeno

  • The Love of Reading

    Funded Jan 1, 2023

Thank you for your generous contribution to our Donors Choose project, The Love of Reading. I am amazed by the caring supporters that are out there who whole heartedly believe and support what we do daily as educators. As supporters, I am sure you are aware that we are definitely in a time of need. Not just in a time of need as educators, but our students are in a time of need.

Even before Covid, students have struggled with reading. The donation that was provided to my students will help to strengthen their reading levels as well as their reading comprehension. Students must be provided with reading material that they enjoy in order to foster their love of reading. Once students have realized that they enjoy reading for entertainment and adventure, then it no longer is a chore to read and comprehend.

Again, thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and support!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tezeno

  • Building Successful Readers

    Funded Feb 10, 2022

I would like to express my sincerest thanks for contributing to the growth of reading in my students. Several of the students in my class are currently reading at a level that is below their grade level. It is often difficult to provide these students with interesting reading opportunities. I know they struggle to read and I don't want them to have to settle for books that do not have any appeal to them.

In my classroom, students are allowed to check out books each week. As they complete the books, they AR test on these books to check their level of comprehension. The students who struggle with reading are now able to have a variety of books to choose from.

Thank you so very much for supporting our future! Thank you so very much for wanting to provide opportunities for struggling readers to grow!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tezeno

  • Growing Good Readers

    Funded Dec 31, 2020

Having a variety of reading material is very important. Students should be given opportunities to be exposed to different types of text, both fiction and nonfiction. Unfortunately, that is not always possible due to financial constraints.

Having access to programs like DonorsChoose is a blessing. So often teachers are bogged down with the everyday tasks of just teaching the curriculum, that it is hard to stop and provide that little something extra that keeps kids interested in school.

My students were overwhelmed with the thought that someone they don't know would actually contribute to their learning. They were excited when the books finally arrived and it shed a light of reality to what I had been telling them. Thank you for putting that sparkle in their eyes! We appreciate you taking the time to believe in us!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tezeno

  • Adventures in Reading!

    Funded Dec 16, 2020

It is often said that "reading takes you places". This is a statement that I constantly reiterate to my students. There are many adventures to be had when you look upon the pages of a book!

I am so thankful that my students have been given the opportunity to embark upon these adventures! The students were excited to receive books by the same author. Quite often they read a book by an author and have to switch to another book, because they do not have access to books they would like to read. These books will give my students the chance to read more material by authors whose writing style they are familiar with.

It was an awesome experience for the students to realize that people who did not know them wanted to provide them with materials to enhance their education. Immediately, the students began signing the books out and wanting to read them in the order of the series. I was pleased by their thought process and their excitement!

Again, thank you for providing us with this opportunity!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tezeno

  • Reading Stars

    Funded Dec 6, 2020

When I first saw that my Reading Stars project had been funded, I was excited. I love to read and I had hoped to provide a way to foster my love of reading onto my students.

I explained to my students what DonorsChoose was and the importance of the service the organization provided. The students were in awe of the idea that someone who had never met them would provide resources for them to become better students. I don't think they actually believed me until the books arrived in mid-January.

The day the custodian delivered the box to my room, the students couldn't contain their curiosity. I had to stop our lesson to open the box and share the contents with them. They just had to see for themselves! They expressed sincere gratitude for the donors that would support a project that would help to provide additional reading materials for them. The looks on their faces were priceless! They touched the books gently and wanted me to immediately place them on the shelves that had before stood empty in our classroom. Well, those shelves stand empty no more and my kids have made plans to get through as many titles as they can before school ends!

Thank you for helping to create Reading Stars!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Tezeno

The materials for this project already have a designated area in my classroom. There will be one utility cart placed near each table in my classroom. I have 8 tables in my classroom. In the carts I will place handouts that will be used for the day. I will also place supplies that are utilized throughout the class period. These supplies will consist of index cards, ink pens, markers, scissors, crayons, and pencils. Utilizing these carts will enable students to have materials readily available at their tables instead of having to wait for materials to be distributed to them. These carts will make distribution efficient and time saving.
