My classroom is already set up-mind you it's only July-but I am SUPER excited for my new batch of kindergartners. There is however one thing missing...places to sit! That's because this year I am trying something not so brand new but brand new to me-flexible seating.
There are so many benefits of flexible seating! Flexible seating will allow my students to feel empowered by having choice when it comes to where they want to sit from day to day. Flexible seating also guarantees my students are comfortable while they work which will boost mural and productivity.
Research also shows that students benefit from the movement they have while bouncing on balls or rolling on rolling stools while they work. Eric Jensen, a former teacher and now a researcher and consultant, concluded in a 2000 report that a review of research shows physical activity benefits learning. “Movement increases heart rate and circulation, enhances spatial learning, provides a break, allows cognitive maturation, stimulates release of beneficial chemicals, counteracts excessive sitting, and affirms the value of implicit learning,” he reported. He suggests students move around regularly, as well as stand and sit in different postures, including squatting, perching and laying down.
The money you donate will help buy chairs that will allow choice and movement which will increase focus and productivity. Examples of the chairs include: wobble chairs, discs, balance balls, padded stools and portable lap top desks. These materials will be used everyday, throughout the whole day by 20 students.
