As first graders, one of the significant areas of growth for students throughout our year of learning will be in terms of student development of learning independence. Students benefit from having technology tools, such as iPads, that they can reference to support their developing foundation of literacy and numeracy concepts.
To enable students to practice this independence, students will benefit from iPads that will have a variety of uses to foster academic independence across content areas. In Literacy Block centers, students will have access to an iPad station where they will be able to listen to expert readers or access teacher-created videos that they can follow along to, as they practice a word work skill. In Math centers, access to iPads will allow for students to practice their math fluency skills as they practice their beginning addition and subtraction facts. Similar to Literacy Centers, the iPads will also be used in Math Centers for students to practice a skill that they may need extra practice on by listening and following along to a teacher-created video. Additionally, both Science and Social Studies will benefit from access to iPad technology, as students will have the opportunity to practice using the internet safely to find the answers to their inquiry questions, access pictures or videos to support understanding, and look at primary or secondary sources. As a former student teacher who taught in a school that had access to iPads, I am aware of the many ways this technology can be effectively used in the classroom to support student independence in learning and building student knowledge of the academic content in the classroom.
