I’m about to start my second year as the fitness teacher at KIPP middle and being there has been an eye-opening experience for the better and sometimes for the sour. The fitness program is starting its fourth year and I’m looking to sustain a learning culture at this school that carries on throughout my student’s time there. I’m trying to build a curriculum that engages students and pushes them to create their own mindset of what health and fitness means to them. The reason I’m writing this today is to ask for support. While the program exists, the lack of equipment is hindering the program’s success. The middle school, which is located in North Memphis, is attached to the high school that has a gym which is not available for us to use at any time. So every day 25 to 30 kids are confined to one room where the ceiling is easily accessible to the average 7th grader. Thinking out of the box and designing fitness units outside, in hallways, and practice in small rooms has been a constant struggle. Like most teachers, my personal funds have contributed to a lot of the equipment the class uses because I believe my students deserve a chance to be successful in health and fitness. At first, I felt like I failed my students because of the things that we didn’t have. However, I knew that making an attempt to provide more has helped me connect with them on a deeper level. While space is limited, I think with the right equipment, it will give these scholars the ability to try new sports, games, and etc.
