  • Reading Our Way to Excellence

    Funded May 6, 2011

It is with great pleasure that I express my gratitude and appreciation for your generous donation to my classroom. My middle schoolers truly struggles with the desire and willingness to read. However, they were completely enthralled with the titles you helped us obtain.

My 7th grade class read Flowers for Algernon and one of the projects we embarked on included symbolism. We combined art with literacy and the students created collages of flowers to symbolize the theme and message of the title of the book. It was wonderful to see my students' creativity come alive as they made connections with the book.

In the 8th grade my students read The Hunger Games. One of the projects my 8th grade students embarked on was to create a graveyard scene on the class bulletin board. They then wrote eulogies for the different characters in the story who were killed during the Hunger Games. It was a wonderful way for the students to show their understanding of the different characters in the story.

With donors like yourself, our youth will continue to have opportunities to develop a love of reading and a greater understanding of the characters they meet and the messages the authors intend to convey. Through this understanding it is my hope that their love of reading will continue to grow and thrive. ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De Jesus

  • Changing the World Through Youth Advocacy

    Funded May 6, 2011

Thank you so very, very much for your generous donation to my classroom. The Ray of Hope Project has finally gotten off the ground and the Flip Cameras you donated will go a long way to enabling my students to embark on journey of advocacy and community change. While it has taken a great deal of time to get the approval for this project, the students have finally begun to script their public service announcements which will be posted on our school website.

To date, my students have identified three projects they wish to undertake: teaching tolerance, feeding the homeless and a holiday toy drive. They have incorporated their lessons in social studies into their advocacy efforts. An example of which is using parallels between Columbus' preconceptions and initial interactions with the Taino peoples, to the modern day interactions between different cultures.

They are currently scripting a short skit that will be filmed using the Flip Cameras you donated. In this way, my students will use an interdisciplinary academic approach to their advocacy effort. As a English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher, I am pleased to no end by this development.

With donors like yourself, our youth have the opportunity to use various talents to create world change via academic and artistic growth ”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De Jesus

  • Because a Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste...

    Funded Jul 22, 2011

It was with great pleasure and excitement that I received the news that my project had been funded. I am a strong believer in the power of books to transform a child's life.

As the result of your donation, my students will have access to a variety of thought-provoking and entertaining books that will inspire them. They will have the opportunity to learn the joys of reading, while expanding their knowledge and building their vocabulary. Thank you for funding this project, which will provide my students with access to the possibility of real academic achievement. Through books and reading my students will develop the skills necessary to survive and thrive in an environment where failure is the norm and success a distant, unreachable possibility.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De Jesus

  • Enhancing My English Literature Library

    Funded Mar 20, 2007

It was with great joy and excitement that I read the notification from Donors Choose informing me of your donation.

The love of reading is a value that I try to instill in my students every day. Your gift of quality literature has made conveying that message and instilling that value a little easier.

I tell my students that with education comes knowledge and the key to education is the ability to read well. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me to provide my students with the key to unlocking their potential.

    With sincere appreciation and gratitude.

    6th Grade Humantie”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. De Jesus

My students are primarily residents of Harlem, New York who oftentimes have not experienced much of what the world has to offer outside of the four corners of their block. They are bright, talented, diverse individuals who lack the exposure necessary to realize their true academic and social/emotional potential. They are limited in how far they can dream, achieve, aspire to, not because of ability, but because that ability has not been nurtured. It is our belief that our students are "leader in training" preparing for the opportunity to dream, achieve and aspire big. Through a wide range of academic and social opportunities we seek to expose our students to many different experiences which will open their minds to limitless potential for their future.
