As we approach the 1st year anniversary of the Santa Rosa Fires, I am reintroducing the concept of Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey to my students. My students will revisit their experience in the fire, mapping how they were the heroes in their own stories. Then, they will explore how other "ordinary" people turn into heroes. They will not only explore other, contemporary issues, but will explore how tragedy can be transformed into something constructive. The books I have selected for the reading circles depict modern young people facing extraordinary circumstances in constructive ways. We will read both fiction and non-fiction, gaining awareness outside of our own experiences as well as an understanding of the basic phenomena of change (through the book, The Tipping Point).
