Our classroom library theme is "Read Like a Champion Today," and students fall in love with "filling out medals." Each medal represents a book they have read independently. In addition to the many hours students spend with eyes on text in class each day, my students commit to reading at least 20 pages of their independent reading book each night. They take pride in being able to display their completion of a book through the medal that is posted in our library. Students can only fill out medals, however, if they have access to high-quality, diverse books in our classroom library. Every book in this project has been supported by the Project LIT community, which is committed to empowering students to bring communities together through culturally relevant books.
