I believe that when a classroom is fun, supportive and safe, students become motivated to come to school and give their best effort. I try to keep these three things in mind every day in my teaching. Even though my students struggle in their reading and writing, they feel safe to try and make mistakes and know that they feel safe so they can try again. These tools and games will be used in the classroom to keep the students motivated with their reading skills with hands -on learning. The students feel safe to make mistakes. They become leaders in my small classroom of 10 students to teach and help each other out. They all know their strengths and feel confident in helping each other in a supportive way. These tools will be used for centers and for individual learning within the classroom and with a paraprofessional. The reading comprehension games will be used for centers. I have kindergarten and first grade students that are coming to my classroom that do not know all of their letters and sounds. With the help of Orton-Gillingham, the sound tubs will be used to teach new sounds. The mystery box and play dough will be used to keep students engaged and motivated in learning phonics. The notebooks will be for the students to have a sense of ownership over their materials and their work.
