First graders are 6 and 7 years old. They are in school for 6 hours. They are active and enthusiastic about learning. I hope to keep that spark for learning alive while meeting their varied needs. Offering a choice of seating options throughout the day better meets their physical needs, but also gives them choice and a voice in their education. Flexible seating increases motivation and attention spans. Let's keep learning fun and not a one size fits all! Our wish list includes many tools that allow students to move and change positions during the day. It includes ball chairs in which kids can wiggle, bounce, and move as they work; bands to put across the bottom of the legs of a chair so they can put their feet on it and bounce their feet; a wiggle cushion to sit on; wobble stools for moving around while working at a table; and a lap desk so kids can sit on the floor while still having a desk to write on. We already have beanbags, floor mats, camp chairs and traditional chairs as options. Some tables will be put down low to work on while sitting on the floor. This variety allows kids to learn about themselves as a learner and make choices that empower them to be more efficient learners. Our differences are what make the world wonderful, I want to embrace our differences in the classroom also.
