This project is for purchasing items the students will use with a LED light panel and sensory table. These are hands on tools that students use to meet their sensory and/or play needs while learning. The panel and table will be used daily during learning centers. With the push for academics in Kindergarten, play time is minimal but still very important for building social skills. Meeting sensory needs is often perceived as play by children. So, we 'play' everyday during centers. The centers are based in math, reading, and language arts skills but are hands on, interactive activities. Every week, there is a new theme for our class and therefore centers too (bats and spiders in October or flowers in May). New themes help keep the student's attention while continuing to review and learn skills. The themes of the light panel and sensory table will change as well. Below is a breakdown of how the items on my list will be used. I was going to make a light box using rope lights and a plastic tub but then I found the amazing LED light panel. It will store nicely as it does not take up as much space as a plastic tub. Transparent materials can be used to make learning interactive. By using the letter and number construction set, students will be practicing letters and numbers. The shapes will be used to reinforce our shape unit. I will use the ice cubes by writing letters on them so the students can play letter/word games. I know the neon shot glasses seem like a strange request but again they can be written on for letter or number matching. The various water beads, rocks and sand items will be used to build sensory and fine motor skills in the sensory table.
