  • Being Supported and Being Safe

    Funded Dec 22, 2020

I want to thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for my student's materials and your contributions. Your donations as well as the resources you have provided me with will increase the students' safety and success in their academics during this arduous school year. Most of my students come from low social economic backgrounds. There are a lot of students with parents that work in the agricultural fields or warehouses, and they struggle to make ends meet. Many of which lack the funds and/or resources to buy school materials. Therefore, when we were welcomed with these donations my students were elated to receive new materials.

I wish you could see their bight eyes and smiling faces when they put on their new black masks and have containers to place their own materials. Their masks are extremely important for these second graders that they sometimes do not have one or they get them dirty quickly. I also have Special Education students that constantly lose their masks or forget to bring one to school. My number one job is to keep my students safe while I teach, and you make that possible with your kindness for all of my students. We all know that one of our medical recommendations is to wear a mask to stop the spread or exposure of the invisible virus that we are facing.

The containers have also made a difference in my students' lives. They have been extremely thankful to have containers to place their materials. Their containers give them their flexibility to keep their own stuff and use at school. By having their own containers, this will keep them from sharing germs as well as lessen the spread of the virus. My students were filled with joy as we opened the boxes. When we opened one of our boxes and found an air purifier that will help with our class' safety due to COVID-19 they had no clue what it was. After explaining them about the machine they were so pumped to turn the air purifier on. This air purifier is a great resource for our class because we only have two little windows that you cannot open due to the building being old. I have to take every precaution to keep my students safe, so they are safe while they grow and learn in my classroom. My second graders are students who need lots of support based on their needs. This school year has been hard due to COVID-19, but your support and assistance with all the supplies have helped them to attend to school and be safe. My job is not only to keep them safe, but to teach them about social-emotional skills. I have a Social Emotional Learning Class at the beginning of each day, and I read aloud books that you bought for them. I read these books with the reading strategies on how to cope with stress, anger, and provide them with life, social, and emotional skills. My students love reading and learning about something new on how to cope with their strong emotions.

I cannot thank you enough for all of this, your genericity has made a big impact on not only me, but my students. Thank you very much!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lopez

  • Practice Makes Perfect

    Funded Sep 27, 2019

My students got so excited to receive all the materials because our school has a limited amount of resources due to budget cuts. The manila folders will be an individual resource for each student. Students will receive one folder to use on a regular basis to practice their reading at home and at school. The manila folders will become their very own fluency folder. The folder will be labeled with their name, giving it a personal touch. It will also include their own work and show their reading progress. The pencil sharpener is a great asset to the classroom because my students use their pencils very often to record their reading every time they practice with their partners. My students need sharpened pencils to do other tasks and the sharpener is essential for making that happen

My students' faces were full of joy and happiness to receive their own and first fluency folder. Most parents could not afford to pay for these materials because they live in poverty. Some students were smiling while others celebrated with a laugh or by waving their folder in the air. What I noticed after this was that they became more motivated to read every day. For most of my students, this is their first fluency folder and I cannot say thank you enough for all your support with these materials because they will make a difference in my students' lives.

I want to thank you on behalf of my students for giving them the opportunity to receive a fluency folder. This fluency folder is essential for their reading growth. All of my students are learning Spanish and becoming bilingual. My students will find a reading passage at their level, 300 high frequency words, and syllables in Spanish. This fluency folder provides them a chance to read and practice at home and at school. I have them practice their Spanish reading every day, and my goal is that my students have something to practice and develop the love for reading.

I have built a routine with my students, where they enter the classroom and sit at the carpet with their reading fluency folder and practice their syllables, high frequency words and move into sharing reading with their bilingual buddies for one minute reading. All of my students love this activity because it allows them to see their progress, which makes them feel accomplished. They have a page with their levels and students have to practice their passage five times and answer questions before they come to me to pass onto the next passage. This activity is a challenge, but my students are taking it. I have all the students passing and moving up in their reading levels because they are taking ownership of their reading.

Most of my students do not have access to books or aren't able to read. This fluency folder is their personalized folder with their name on it and has improved their learning. You have helped not only me, but also the lives of the students. From the bottom of my heart thank you so much!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lopez

  • Circle Time!

    Funded Sep 24, 2018

I want to thank you so much for our carpet. It is a great tool for our students that we use daily when we come to circle time and other activities. Our classroom carpet is old and uncomfortable to sit on it when we do circle time. Our students enjoy the new rug and I have less behavior issues when we do activities at the carpet.

You should have seen their reaction when they saw this carpet for the first time. They were smiling and happy to have a new carpet. They kept touching it and smiling! I have one girl that offer help to keep this carpet clean, and she will clean it before we go home. All 42 students are happy and I want to thank you for this with all my heart. Thank you so much for making a huge difference in my class.

Our students behave better with this new carpet, they enjoy it and do not complain about being hard to sit on. Our students can sit for more than 20 minutes and do not complain about it. Before we had this new carpet, our students were restless at the floor and did not want to sit for a long time anymore. I have one girl that has back pain, she complained about seating on the hard and old floor. Students are really enjoying it.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Lopez

I want to create a more welcoming and safe environment for all my students. My students will benefit from this classroom rug because they will have a specific place to sit and do activities. This activity carpet will be the center of the classroom and this is where my students can have a comfortable place to gather, share ideas, and learn during circle time. The smaller things make a huge difference when learning. A rug will be nice to have for a better learning area. However, the rug is not just a rug, but a peaceful area where we can all join together and be one.
