My classroom is piloting a coffee cart to address several of the core deficits of autism, including social and communication skills. Students will engage in interactions with school staff and peers and work together as a team to fulfill coffee orders and deliver them to teachers, promoting the use of appropriate and functional interactions. They will work to build the necessary communication skills to ask and answer questions, request help when needed, and build their vocabulary in a motivating and engaging activity!
Students with autism require opportunities to practice these critical skills in a meaningful environment. They will also practice functional academic skills, including money, measurement, counting, oral and written comprehension, and sequencing. Students will work as a team to complete coffee orders and deliver them to teachers in the building - and teachers will get coffee (woo hoo)!
The self-determination and independence this project will bring to my students will have a tremendous and invaluable impact. Of adults with disabilities, only 16.8% are employed, regardless of their great potential. It is important for us to be proactive, start early, and work with a sense of urgency in preparing our children to be college- and career-ready by fostering independence and prerequisite skills.
While we need your help to get this project off the ground, it will soon be able to sustain itself with the income from purchased coffee. This one-time donation will allow students at our school to continue to benefit from this project for years to come!
