Power in Our Stories
Funded Aug 29, 2019With these texts we have explored what it means to be bilingual in my classroom. Although we are fostering our literacy skills in English the students have established how special it is to read for fun. Reading in my classroom looks like reading for pleasure, the students love to access these texts during their free time. My students who are recent arrivals to the US have truly enjoyed these texts, being able to see the similarities between our texts in English and Spanish has motivated them to try to speak my English and learn their letters in English as well as apply their recently learned skills.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Montgomery Family Foundation and 5 other donors.Finding Ourselves in Text
Funded Aug 9, 2018Thank you so much for the funds to help me build my classroom library! With your monies I was able to buy a variety of culturally relevant books ,particularly a child friendly biography about Selena. My students are from Texas, and are very familiar with the Tejano singer, and because of the book they decided we need to include Selena on our Day of the Dead Altar.
One of the most meaningful books to my class was Pelitos by Sandra Cisneros. I was able to bring my copy of "The House on Mango Street" which includes the short story and motivate my students to want to grow in their reading abilities in English and Spanish.
Additionally I used the book Pelitos to teach my students about personal narratives, since we are currently writing our own. I got very emotional while reading because the story is part of one of my favorite books and it made me think of my mother. I cried while reading, and that helped my students understand that personal narratives cause us to feel emotions, and they are hard at word in order to create those emotions in their own writing.
My students love to explore the texts we received whenever they have an opportunity and are so excited to see stories that have been told to them at home be in our classroom library. Thank you so much!”

Ms. Alvarez
