As adults, we would find it very difficult to sit for an extended amount of time in a traditional desk, yet, we ask our students to do this on a daily basis. Flexible seating is an upward trend in education, and often times middle school teachers forget that the need for flexible seating extends beyond grades K-5. My students would benefit from having different seating options available to them in the classroom. My goal for this school year, is to provide a comfortable learning environment for all of my students. For some, this might be a traditional desk, but all seats are not created equal and students need more seating options. I will use the futon to create a comfortable space, where students can work either independently or with a small group. Independent reading is one of the daily components of my class, so the futon will also provide a great spot for students to sit and read their book of choice. The bean bag chairs will be placed in the library corner of my room to create a quiet space for independent reading. They can also be moved around the room for students to use during small group work and for students to sit on during our whole group instruction. The folding chairs will provide a great alternative seat for any student who need a break from their desk. They can also be used when working in small groups, and since they fold up, then can be easily be stored and moved around as the students move around in their groups.
