Providing time to read and write is crucial to students’ literacy development. Allowing students to self-select reading or working locations and seats increases student engagement by empowering them through choice in their learning environment. During the past school year, I purchased some stools and noticed a significant increase in the focus, productivity, and success of my students, particularly those with unique sensory and learning needs. My students spent more time engaged in reading and working when they utilized the varied seating options, and the seating options were utilized throughout the day. Students also demonstrated increased responsibility and self-awareness of their learning needs, selecting alternative seating as another tool to support them as learners and increase the caliber of their work and learning. Providing alternative seating options will allow my students to maximize their potential for growth, learning, and success. I would like to expand the seating in my classroom to include a greater variety of seating choices, as well as a greater number of alternative seats. The materials I am hoping to receive for my classroom will benefit all students in my class, especially those with unique learning needs, including ADHD, ADD, ASD, and others. My students were eager to utilize the limited seating options that I was able to provide during the past academic year, and I am eager to support and witness the excitement and learning opportunities that will be provided through the increased alternative seating from this project!
