My students, who deal with behavioral and emotional difficulties, can be inspired to change and grow through the use of art, play, game and classroom cooking projects. These materials will allow me to provide structured social learning time and practice with my students. This is essential in their goal of being able to eventually participate more and more in a general education classroom. What better way to learn and practice real-life social skills that through the use of the creative arts. The games and puzzles will allow the kids to work on cooperation, following directions and dealing with frustration in a structured social time. Dramatic play with the puppets and restaurant and kitchen tools will again provide a safe and real-life setting for them to learn to share, cooperate and handle life problems in a successful way. We also want to amp up snack time into a simple class "cooking" time by using the toaster oven to make cookies, muffins, etc. This is when we work on social skills, using manners, having appropriate conversations and of course cooperation. All the while kids will also be incorporating math skills such as using money at a "restaurant", measuring while cooking. Writing will also be a vehicle for my students to write about a real-life experience they had while serving "customers" or writing about a game they lost but didn't get angry about. The paints and brushes will provide tools for the kids to express their feeling through painting. These materials will bring joy to some great kids that sometimes seem to get lost in life. Thanks!
