"Reading gives us someplace to go, when we have to stay where we are". I have witnessed so many of my students visiting new places from within the pages of a book, whether they were physical pages or from a digital text, their engagement was the same. In our classroom, we try to provide as many opportunities as possible to build and use our literacy skills. One of those ways is to provide daily centers that allow children the opportunity to read for pleasure. Little do they know that those exciting characters are teaching them more than just to be a good friend. When that students tells their classmate about the awesome book they just read, they are using the skills that teachers work so hard to instill in young readers...comprehension. Not only do we want students to read a text but we want them to understand it and remember why they loved reading it so much. In our fast paced, technology filled world, It's becoming more and more important that children are taught to use technology responsibly and safely. With iPads in the classroom, we are able to introduce more texts than would ever fit on our bookshelves and we can provide programs that allow students to build their comprehension skills as they are reading, all while making it fun. However it doesn't end there. These days iPads are used for more than just an E-reader. There are so many apps. that allow students to digitally enhance their writing and share it with their parents through email, or practicing their sight words with their classmates. Lastly we have the opportunity to teach responsibility of using technology by helping students understand the importance of Digital Citizenship and properly caring for our classroom supplies.
