Cycling for Academic Progress
Funded May 13, 2023When my students and I first saw that donors were giving to Cycling for Academic Progress, we were excited. This is because, when I start our cycling activities early in spring of 2024, I will send fewer letters home informing parents that there is no more space available for their child to join our cycling club.
Thank you so much for making this project possible for my younger cyclists. I received the project materials towards the end of the 2022-23 school year . Unfortunately, our new bikes had not yet been put together for us to start adding new members to our club. Therefore, I was not able to take photos with our new riders. However, as news of the new helmets' arrival spread in our school, people began to talk excitedly about the thirty new students that would be able to join our cycling club. Our members look forward to inviting their friends to join our growing cycling club.
We are anxious for spring to come and have new members in our cycling club. We will continue to emphasize the importance of safe rides, how cycling can improve our health and academics, and how it maintains a clean atmosphere for us all.”

Funded Dec 6, 2018The concept of thermal energy, and how it transfers from place to place, is an important one and part of our student's daily lives. However, since we cannot see thermal energy moving, it is also difficult to understand. The tools you have donated to our classroom have been of great significance in aiding my students in visualizing this concept, through hands on activities. This has spurred a great deal of student discussion, and therefore better understanding of how energy moves. By using the heat transfer tools you made possible, my students were able to collect data from their observations and analyze this information in order to come up with a reasonable scientific conclusion of what went on. This means they understand HOW energy transfers in our world.
Students were thrilled when I announced to them that we had received the necessary funding to explore heat transfer through hands on activities. Throughout the activities performed with these tools, the students were fully engaged and actively thinking about their observations and data. One of the comments I heard across my five classes was, "How is it that the hot object is losing so much heat and the cold one gaining so little?" Bringing in their observations led my students to apply their critical thinking and understand concept of conductors and insulators. It was gratifying to see them trying to explain further their observations. I truly believe that my students would not have learned and enjoyed learning as much as they did without the use of the tools that you have supported, and which brought excitement and added rigor to the classroom.
My next step in providing students with the necessary science learning tools is to obtain more advanced computer technology. This will help develop their critical skills. I believe that the use of certain types of technology, such as the graphics and research functions available with a tablet, will enhance my student's skills and add to our inquiry-based teaching.”
