I am so excited about the program I am starting at my school. After this past year, our students need skills to cope with stress, anxiety, and change more than ever:The benefits of yoga for kids are innumerable. It’s hard to think of anything that can do as much for a child’s all around physical and mental health as yoga, and maybe even more amazing, is the fact that yoga can improve a student’s ability to succeed in every other subject taught at Leihoku.
Recent studies show that kids today are five-to-eight times more likely to report symptoms of anxiety and depression than kids who lived at the height of the Great Depression. Anxiety reduces our ability to hold information in our minds and makes thought processing less efficient. Many of our students deal with massive amounts of trauma, stress, and anxiety on a daily basis. Studies have also shown that stressed kids can’t learn as effectively. The brain does not focus well; it has a hard time integrating information, and it does not remember information as efficiently. But, yoga can physically change the brain and improve logic, reasoning skills, and the ability to deal with emotional issues, stress, anxiety, and depression.
Yoga helps give kids the strong foundation they need to live successful, fulfilling, rewarding lives. I think it is our responsibility to do all we can to improve the physical and mental health of the kids at our school. It is our responsibility to develop their sense of wonder and to give them a strong sense of self so they know where they belong in this world and can contribute to making their community a better place. Finally, yoga just makes you happy, and that is what we want more than anything for all of the great kids.
