The students I serve are struggling readers who all have an independent reading level that is below their grade level. Providing access to a variety of high interest and high quality reading materials at a variety of Lexile levels will definitely help these students improve their reading ability and will help spark an interest in reading that will assist them in every area of study. My goal is to help all my students raise their Lexile ability through reading the most up to date novels that spark their interest. My program is a skilled based program that differentiates learning to allow each student to have access to materials (which we need more of - that is why I am creating this Donors Choose project) and lessons that could help them each independently improve their reading ability. The goal of helping students raise their Lexile ability is beneficial to both the students and our society in general. As students improve their reading ability, this can help them in their areas of study, which in turn can help them become better students. Students that are better readers have a tendency to see education in a more positive light, which could lead to motivation to attend college and better both their lives and society in turn.
