For young children play is key to their development in all areas. The room I am in is a new addition to this school, and we are in need of some materials that I feel are essential to an early childhood classroom such as a sensory table, musical instruments, props for dramatic play and play dough.
When young children engage in dramatic play they are learning language skills, problem solving, self regulation, and both math and literacy skills. In my classroom right now, the children are anxious to get to dramatic play to be the first to play with the one baby that we have. The dolls, clothes, and costumes I am looking to purchase will allow the children to act out a gamut of make believe and everyday scenarios.
At any given time during Centers, I can find a child playing in the water and bubbles in our sink, in part because our class is lacking a sensory table. At the sensory table they can explore using all their senses developing many skills which are necessary for later learning in all content areas, so I am looking to purchase a sensory table for our room allowing them to experiment with water, sand, goop, and other sensory materials.
My children this year LOVE music, and it is 'instrumental' in crossing language barriers as many of our students are ELL. I would love some musical instruments to enhance their music experience allowing them to experiment with and create different sounds, rhythms. and express themselves.
And finally, I would love some play dough for my children to explore, create and use their imaginations with this essential medium for early learners. It is an awesome sensory experience, helps develop fine motor skills, and enhances both language and creativity development.
