Introducing Service Learning and Great Teaching Strategies
Funded Mar 18, 2015Thank you for your donation to my Donor's Choose project for professional development! Having the opportunity to learn is part of being a life-long learner - a quality that I hope to instill in my students! I really enjoyed the opportunity to study about the qualities that great teachers share, and I have already begun to put into practice some of the things that I've learned. I also enjoyed the Service Learning course, and am looking forward to starting a project in the spring that can put to use my new knowledge.”

Funded Jan 19, 2015Thank you for your gift to our school! The students are excited about making video projects and I am happy that I can help students have the technology they need to make it happen. So many of our students do not have video cameras and smart phones, so I am happy that this video camera (and protective bag) can help "level the playing field" for my amazing students.
Another benefit from this project is that it gave me the opportunity to teach my students about generosity. They cannot believe that strangers would give their own money to help out a classroom in a school they've never heard of in the middle of the United States. They were shocked when I told them that there are generous people who want our nation's kids to have the best learning opportunities possible... and who help make things happen with whatever donation they can.
My hope is that these french-speaking students will go out into the world feeling they are a part of a larger community. I hope they will be generous, and remember that strangers helped them out one day when they were just kids in high school. I hope they are our future donors through Donors Choose, and that they help the next generation of learners.
Thank you!”

French Films For Learning!
Funded Sep 25, 2013Thank you so much for the French films! Your gift enabled my French V students to learn about French New Wave cinema, opened up their minds to what life, film and filmmakers were like in the 1950s, and gave them a cultural reference point that will enable them to make valuable connections when they are in college and the greater world. Because of your gift, students now know François Truffaut and his chef d'oeuvre film (Les 400 Coups), and had insightful conversations about film, education, and family life as a result.
My French 2 classes were exposed to French cinema in a more light-hearted way, through Le Petit Nicolas. We will read some of the famous stories in French 3 and 4, so this video will help them visualize the characters and feel more invested in the reading when it comes to them. They loved the film, and are looking forward to more films next year and beyond.
Your gift makes French more interesting for my students, and brings the 7th art into my classroom. Un grand merci!!”

La Musique! Help Bring French Culture to Our Classroom
Funded Dec 31, 2012Thank you for your generous donation to our classroom!! It was such a joy to share this experience with my high school kids! My students have been exploring French music, and love using the new iPod dock & boom box. Students brought in music to share with their classmates, and it was fun to see how their musical tastes varied so widely... from old standards to pop and rap. In class, we have been listening to African music as part of our unit on Senegal, and students were writing down the names of artists they liked, so they could access the music later! This project also taught my students about generosity, and how we are all part of a larger community. They were so surprised that someone unrelated to our school actually cares about their learning. My hope is that these students will become tomorrows donors, and our circle of giving will continue. Merci encore!”

Action! Recording our Language Learning in Grade 2
Funded Apr 30, 2012Thank you for your generous donation to our classroom Donors Choose project! Your donation toward a video camera ensures that our students will be able to document their learning, growth, and language development as they progress in 2nd grade.
I am touched by your generosity and am thankful for your continued support. Donors Choose has allowed us to provide opportunities that we would not otherwise be able to provide for our students.
Merci!!”

French Resources for Little French Learners
Funded Jun 28, 2011Thank you for supporting our Donors Choose project last spring! This project provided French-language geography and literacy resources for our school. As a result of your donation, globes have been distributed to many of our classrooms. The globes help support instruction in our internationally-minded school, and students love to find various countries and continents with them. You are also helping our students increase their awareness and recognition of French-speaking countries with the set of flags from francophone countries (on display in our Grade 1 hallway). Other French resources like stickers and dice help our students become better readers and help maintain the language environment. Your support of our school has been tremendous, and we appreciate all that you do!”

Help Our Budding Mathematicians be Organized & Autonomous
Funded Jan 31, 2011Thank you for your generous donation to our Donors Choose project! The storage unit that you provided for my students is AMAZING! There are 25 sturdy tubs that hold different math activities. The students then can choose which math tub they'd like to work on, and get started on the activity - all of the materials are already ready inside! This helps my Kindergarten students become autonomous and motivated for math.
I sincerely appreciate your generosity in funding this and other Donors Choose projects in our area. Your support has meant a lot to me and my students!”

All-School Resources
Funded Jan 31, 2011Thank you for your donation to our school's Donors Choose project! Your donation helped fund a listening center for our students, as well as some much-needed extension cords. The listening center has been extremely helpful when students were completing their computer-based reading and math assessments. Thanks to the headphones, several students could be tested simultaneously, and without disrupting neighboring classes. We have also been able to use the unit to play music during our grade-level meetings and specialist classes.
We appreciate your support!

Taking Care Of The Planet
Funded Jan 31, 2011Thank you for your generous donation to our classroom through Donors Choose! Our Kindergarten students were inspired through the many resources we received through this grant. They poured through books about bugs, water, recycling and the Earth. They took careful observations of our live caterpillars, witnessing their transformation into butterflies. They collected samples from nature and delighted in getting a close-up using our magnifiers.
Your gift helped bring nature to our urban classroom, and has helped our students become invested in taking care of our Earth.
Thank you! ”

Healthy Choices
Funded Dec 13, 2010Thank you for your generous donation to our Donors Choose project on healthy choices! The materials we ordered have made learning about the human body a more enriching experience for our students. They loved brushing the big teeth and using the healthy food puppets to animate songs and stories about the food groups. They also learned so much playing the food pyramid game, where they filled their shopping list with products from each category... building vocabulary and learning how to have a balanced meal at the same time.
Your contribution has made a difference- thank you!”

Mrs. Giovannoni
