Staying organized is essential for our school day to be productive. With the numerous daily interruptions, such as office announcements, visitors, and behavior issues, it is vital to reduce any in which I have control over. Each student having their own seat sack eliminates the need for them to constantly be opening and closing desks. Unfortunately, our schools' desks are loud, tend to slam, and often interfere with the adjacent desk. Students would keep the items that they use most often in their seat sack. These include, but aren't limited to, supply box, ruler, trade books which they read when their work is complete, white board, dry erase markers and eraser, poem folder, and daily work folder. With these items in their seat sack, the number of times the student needs to go into his or her desk is greatly reduced. This is one reason that seat sacks are a necessity.
The second reason is that they are an organizational tool. With seat sacks, students will be able to keep their desks organized. Their desks will contain math text and workbook, reading text, phonics workbook, and notebooks for science and social studies. Being organized greatly reduces time off task and classroom disruptions. If a student has a seat sack, he or she spends 3-5 seconds locating the needed text or notebook to begin the lesson. Seat sacks eliminate the student or students that are spending 5 or more minutes searching their desk for the needed supply or supplies. Seat sacks will also eliminate classroom disruptions which are brought about by the students who have their supplies and are waiting for classmates to locate theirs. During this "down time", second graders who are 7-8 years old begin to talk, lose interest in the lesson, and/or become distracted.
