My kindergarten scholars need a kitchen and pretend food in order to make our market & healthy food unit come alive! Using these items, our scholars will role play during learning labs. One of the themes we discuss is about farmers and how important their job is because they grow many of the items we eat daily to survive. They learn that without farmers getting up at the crack of dawn, they would not be able to water, plant or their harvest crops. When children participate in role-play, they develop a deeper social understanding of how important each person is to society. They learn that everyone has value. As students role-play with the kitchen and food, they will be able to pretend they are purchasing items such as dairy products, fruits, vegetables and meat. They will be able to practice storing, cooking, and interacting with food and market items in a kitchen. As students learn how to role play with food and other items, they can buy vegetables, practice counting money and learn how to collaborate well with others. Based on multiple research studies, play could be a major factor in developing an understanding of one's self and others's (e.g., Taylor &Carlson, 1997; Lillard, 1993). Its amazing how one little kitchen can help scholars develop and extend their understandings others and of the real world.
