As I have said, my students know about slavery and the Civil Rights Movement. However, many of my students have little knowledge of how the West African slave trade began. Furthermore, most of them do not have even a close understanding of how awful African Americans were treated during slavery or even after it ended. Both of these important novels will open their eyes to horror suffered by Africans as they were brought to the Americas, the horrors they suffered as slaves and the horrors they suffered for almost 100 years after slavery was abolished. Barracoon will introduce my students to the life of Cudjo Lewis, the only remaining former slave who could recount his capture in African, his time along the Middle Passage and his time as a slave. The year was 1927 and Zora Neal Hurston did everything should could to get this extremely important man to share his story. The Devil in the Grove will introduce my students to Thurgood Marshall as he tries to help three African American men falsely accused of raping a white women in Florida in 1949. While the novels main focus is on that story, it also delves into multiple other stories surrounding Thurgood Marshall and the horrors he and others faced while he was working for the NAACP. These two novels are so engaging they will quickly capture my students interests and give them the insight they need to fully understand and finally appreciate what those who came before them did to make their lives better in so many ways.
