At my school, fourth grade is departmentalized, which means that I teach 50+ students each year! I have asked for small drawstring bags, or as we call them, "book baggies" for my students to easily take their materials from one class to the next. I have found that these book baggies cut down on lost notebooks and forgotten pencils, and have helped with student organization. I have asked for 60 of these bags because we have many students moving in and out of our school throughout the year. I have also asked for a horse shoe table. Small group instruction is a large part of my day, and this table will allow me to focus on each individual student in my group, no matter where they're sitting! Small group instruction is so important, as they are getting individualized instruction that meets them on their level and allows them to grow. In addition to this, I have asked for skinny whiteboard markers. I have a class set of personal white boards for my students, but they go through a lot of markers! My students use these during small group and whole group instruction, as well as independent and partner activities. They are an easy and fun way for students to show what they know, and using personal whiteboards has significantly cut down on paper usage! Lastly, I have asked for adhesive velcro strips. I use these everywhere in my room, from putting velcro on their name tags for an easy switch, to classroom jobs, to quickly putting anchor charts and task cards on the walls as a reference to my lessons. Velcro makes it easy to move things around so that materials are readily accessible for my students.
