My students need yoga mats to help create healthy boundaries, reduce conflict, and provide a safe place to consistently create a foundation for healthy habits. I teach with the Tulsa Public School district, in Oklahoma where 86% of children qualify for free or reduced lunch. There are over 35 thousand students served in our district and I have the privilege of teaching 25 of these energetic, creative, and enthusiastic kindergarten scholars. I aim to ignite and foster a love for learning, and cultivate a calm and respectful classroom environment. I also aspire to instill positive and lifelong strategies to help scholars cope with stress, manage their emotions, and create healthy lifestyles. Since I do teach Kinder kiddos, there is a high level of energy in the classroom, paired with the fact that this is also most students’ first year to the school process, creates a somewhat challenging and chaotic environment at times. I have been implementing a daily routine of yoga, deep breathing, and conscious discipline techniques to teach children how to consciously calm down and take control of their emotions. We have been using the arm length rule on carpet spaces in the classroom, instead of yoga mats; however, as you can probably predict with wobbly Kinder’s this has lead to many conflicts. Since Kinders are visual learners Yoga mats will help children see what space belongs to them, and prevent conflict.
