Being a 1:1 classroom gives my students the chance to interact with technology on a daily basis. Technology is a great tool, but can also be very limiting if it moves beyond what is made available to students--students can only move as far as the limits of what is provided to them. Having Apple Pencils in the classroom would allow students to use the most up-to-date software available to them on their devices, becoming producers in their learning and not merely consumers. Apple's current catch phrase is "Everyone Can Create". Taking this into account, I want to give my students every opportunity to create in every way possible. Because I've seen the positive effects of technology in the classroom, I know that this has the ability to add yet another level of learning, choice, and creativity to my students' work. Knowing that this small piece of technology might excite a student whose least favorite subject is writing would make the project every bit worth being funded. My classroom is filled with software engineers, artists, writers, athletes, CEOs, and beyond--they just have yet to be discovered.
When my students leave high school, it is certain that they will be preparing to hold jobs that do not yet exist--they "beyond". If my job is to prepare students to be productive members of society, then I am expected to prepare them for things that I cannot even imagine. However, it is certain that they will be expected to successfully use technology and be productive with it. With this assurance, the students in my classroom must be provided with every opportunity possible for this to become second nature. If my students can successfully and safely navigate the world of technology as it is today, they will be the leaders of tomorrow.
