New teachers are put at a disadvantage because they can't obtain all the student materials, organizational supplies, and educational decor that facilitate student learning. This puts their students at a disadvantage too. As a new teacher, I want my 11th-graders to come into a classroom welcomed with educational and inspirational decor, the materials they need, and an organized teacher! I've chosen student supplies that my department doesn't provide, including colored pencils, highlighters, scissors, and glue sticks that will allow students to engage in creative activities in my English class. Additionally, some of the educational decor I selected will not just prevent my students from walking into a classroom with bland walls. It will offer my students quick reference guides to help with classwork, such as the "traits of good writing bulletin board." To encourage my students to consider different perspectives in the classroom, I will use the burlap banner to display the words "Open your mind before the door." When students enter my classroom, this wall decor will inspire them to learn and grow as people, especially if they read my favorite Harry Potter quote posted on the wall: "It is our choices that show us what we truly are, far more than our abilities." -Albus Dumbledore
