I have purchased a year long literacy curriculum from a teacher resource website. The curriculum focuses on embedding literacy in every part of the classroom, aiding in emergent reading skills with hands-on center activities and crafts. With your donation, my students will be able to have the books that are needed for the curriculum and enter the many worlds that can often only be seen in books. There are over 60 books needed for the year long curriculum. These books go across the spectrum, from reading education and science to adventure stories and a cookie eating mouse. My students love reading the Grandpa Tree, a story about the life cycle of trees. The tree starts as a sprout and then as it grows taller and older it shelters those trees that are smaller. Finally it comes time for the tree, which is now a grandpa tree, to fall down and make room for the new younger trees it has been sheltering. We use our bodies and act out the story. My students take turns becoming the grandpa tree, each of them crouching down and then slowly standing up spreading their arms up and then dramatically falling over. These priceless moments are made possible by the books we read. My students get to learn and live the stories because we have the books to share. The more exposure my students have to books, the better chance they have to become strong readers.
