My sixth graders have high expectations placed upon them when it comes to writing, and they are all starting from a different skill level. Having a designated small group area of the classroom as well as the tools necessary for annotating and editing will allow me to work with them individually on a regular basis and meet their individual needs. The half-moon shaped table and the seating will allow me to work closely with several students at once, the highlighters and colored pens will be for the students to use while annotating texts and editing their drafts, and the dry erase stickers will allow for quick explanations and spelling guidance. Having these materials will ensure every student has the necessary tools and none of them are distracted by having less than others. Having a functional area of the classroom where we can write, edit, and hone in on students' individual needs TOGETHER will drastically improve their writing as well as their self-confidence. The self-confidence must go hand-in-hand with the skills in order for them to successfully use those skills later in life. In sixth grade, students annotate complex texts to enhance their understanding of the topic; edit, peer-edit, and revise their drafts; and constantly practice fluency and comprehension. I can much more effectively help students develop all of these skills in a small group setting where I can model expectations, guide the process, and closely monitor progress.
