We intend to use these novels in a unit that will stress the importance of our students’ mental health, especially regarding their own body images and perceptions. Through our body positivity unit, we will introduce them to literature that will help them do just that. Since we are in a high poverty area, asking students to purchase their own novels is not a choice for us. All of our students want to feel good about themselves, and school should be a place where they can. We believe this focus on body positivity should be a part of that. These novels will set the tone for our body positive literature unit. Students will chose novels to work in literature circles with their peers. They will spend time reading and discussing the issues they face regarding their own body image and the body image perceptions presented in the literature.
