Have you ever been to Starbucks? Starbucks has multiple choices of seating. Tall stools at high tables, couch, bistro table and chairs. We have choices when we get our coffee or tea. In traditional classrooms, students have one choice. A desk. The teacher tells them where to sit. In a flexible seating classroom, students make the choice as to where they sit and what their seating choice is. Research shows that students' productivity and engagement increase if they have choices. They are more comfortable and are able to choose who they work with. If the student needs to move frequently, a Gaiam Kids Stay-N-Play Children's Balance Ball - Flexible School Chair will give them the movement they need to stay focused. Taller students may choose the Poly and Bark Trattoria Stool at a raised table, so their knees are not hitting the desk. To offer opportunities for collaboration, the Flex-Space A Place for Everyone Carpet, will provide every student a space to turn and discuss what they are learning with a partner. Common Core Standards require students to collaborate, communicate to others, and be critical thinkers. Offering flexible seating in the classroom provides a path to achieve the required standards.
