In planning for next year's reading instruction, the fourth-grade team at my school decided to change up the way we have been teaching reading. Instead of teaching the reading standards in isolation, we planned to connect these standards with our social studies content and practice these reading skills through book studies. The idea is that we'll expose students to the reading standards (making inferences, theme, point of view, text features, etc) through reading a novel that connects to our unit on the Civil War, modeling and practicing good reading behaviors using the novel "Who Was Abraham Lincoln." We need a copy of the book for each student in our grade level in order for this instructional change to be successful. When students have their own copy of the text, they can practice reading and connecting with the text on their own. Due to funding, the library was unable to help us to put this plan into action. Please help us to teach our students to be better readers and to make our Civil War unit more engaging!
