For this project, we are focusing on adding current, short sources of reading. Several of my students have reading levels below grade level. I have found that offering magazines really supports reading as a fun activity rather than a task. Magazines have both short and long articles and stories, as well as fun topics that are both educational and keep students in the loop of current events. I have added several magazine subscriptions such as TIME for kids, National Geographic for kids, Popular Mechanics, Sports Illustrsted for kids. Additionally, we will be doing an exercise called, “flashlight Friday”, where students will be able to read in the dark. This is a fun and engaging time where students will use Everbrite flashlights. Also, having a compact classroom has it's struggles. Many students feel cramped. As growing boys and girls we need a cubbie system to help students feel like they have their own space where their belongings can be safe. We will use the cube storage organizer as our cubbies! Lastly, students crave the ability to be able to express themselves. I have requested Crayola paint brushes, 3 oz disposable cups and tempura paints for various art projects throughout the year. Art unfortunately is not funded by the district and, therefore, we are hoping to teach self expression through painting.
