My students need the ability and availability to choose what best suites their needs to work and learn. In today's education, students have much higher standards and expectations. They are constantly expected to work and learn, read and write. We adults expect students to sit and listen for extended periods of time, yet do not expect the same from ourselves.
Today's curriculum is rigorous, and state testing is just as demanding. Yes, there are students who seek out answers to their questions and the curious wonders of the world; however, there are other students who do not have that drive. My job is to give them that motivation, to open that door to enduring understandings and the "want" in "I want to know..." In order to achieve this, students need to be and feel safe, comfortable, respected.
In order to address this need, flexible seating is essential. Giving the student the flexibility and independence to choose what tool to use for any style of learning. I have used flexible seating for 2 years and will never go back. Unfortunately, the choices I have given my students have been used, and used hard. I have had many items break, pop, tear, and have had to throw away almost all of my seating options. I also need to provide a better cubby system as my bins have broken and proven not to be very useful. My students thrive on this type of classroom environment and the need for me to continue this option is essential in order to maintain this type of learning environment.
Thank you for your consideration.
