The books that I have chosen were inspired by Melissa Finch, who is a fellow Special Education teacher. She has created an entire curriculum using these books as a fun alternative to direct instruction to teach the basics of behavior. These books will be paired with fun and creative lessons and activities that will help my students learn how to act appropriately in school, at home, and in the community. The books will help my students to learn about classroom rules, school rules, student behaviors, and social skills. The majority of my students have trouble communicating their wants, needs, or feelings. When they are upset or angry, they do not know how to cope and how to calm down. "When Miles Got Mad" by Sam Kurtzman-Counter is a book that will teach students how to deal with anger and how to calm down appropriately. Another great resource would be "The Juice Box Bully" by Bob Sornson and Marla Dismondy. This great book will help my students to understand that bullying is not tolerated and how to deal with bullying. All of these great books will be used as part of my curriculum to help my students to better understand how to behave appropriately in different settings and know what to do when they become upset or angry.
