How many of you remember recess in elementary school? It is such an important part of the student's day. Recess is their time to form relationships and a time for them to relieve stress and rejuvenate their minds. Our students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds. These materials will give my students the opportunity to engage in free play. Outdoor recess and indoor recess provide our students a time to relax and rejuvenate. When given the opportunity to engage in recess, students perform better in the classroom. When students engage in positive healthy play, they foster peer relationships and build social skills. Indoor recess provides students an opportunity to build relationships with their peers as well as foster their creativity. Students are able to play games with one another such as Trouble and Connect 4. Through these games, students learn cooperative play and also have the chance to improve social skills. Outdoor recess activities provide students the opportunity to engage in a fun way of exercising as well as building social skills. Students also enjoy some down time in order to re-focus in the classroom. When students engage in team sports such as soccer and kickball they are able to work together in a fun way while promoting positive interactions among peers.
