Books In Their Hands!
Funded Oct 3, 2024My students ended their semester with reading The Diary of Anne Frank. With the books that were donated through this project, the students were able to learn more about the hardships of Jews and what life was like during WW II.
Many of my students reading scores have jumped a full grade level this year.
Our next unit will be Fantasy where students will use the Hero's Journey to understand the plot of a story. The students are eager to delve into our graphic novels!
Thank you to all who donated.”

Funded Jul 17, 2023Thank you for the donations to help provide the standing desks, wiggle feet, and other flexible seating options for my classroom. All of the students have loved being able to wiggle and rock in their chairs safely. Many students choose to use the standing desks to complete their independent work, especially closer to the end of the day. A few students have chosen to use the floor desks instead of sitting in a typical chair. All of my students have expressed appreciation for having these options.
As their teacher I have noticed that when the students have the opportunity to choose their flexible seating options, they have been able to focus more on the task at hand and less of fulling sensory needs in a more distracting way. Many of the other teachers in the school have come to the room to see what these wiggle seats and standing desks look like and feel like. A few have already started to looking into purchasing some for their own classrooms!
My next project will be focusing on reading material. It is very hard to find High Interest, low reading level, books for 5th graders. Many of the books that are available at their instructional reading level are too "babyish" for them and do not hold their interest. I would like to invest in getting more graphic novels for these students. Specifically, the graphic novels that had been adapted from chapter books, such as the Percy Jackson series.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Heath
