Third grade is such a important developmental stage both socially and academically. I encourage my students to make choices that allow for self control. It is important that my students make choices that affect them and enhance their own development. Offering my students alternative seating enhances their learning during reading and writing. I see more stamina during reading when they are given the option to move around the room and more productivity out of their writing. I have allowed for students to move around the room, but with only 1 bean bag chair, many students complain that all the good spots are taken. I would love to use the floor cushions for reading in the class library as well as additional seats during instruction. These can be pulled up to a low table in front or be utilized with a clipboard or a whiteboard on the floor during instruction. These cushions are easy enough for my students to move around the room. The bean bags would remain in the classroom library and allow for more than just the one bean bag. Students primarily would use the bean bag during read to self time. Lastly, the wiggle seats will be a wonderful incentive for my students to work towards. They may choose to use dojo points to use the wiggle seat at their own desk and I may also rotate the seats so that each student gets a chance to sit on it. This will also allow me to observe which students benefit from the use of a wiggle seat. I believe that additional flexible seating options will allow students to feel more comfortable in my room, creating successful learning.Alternative seating options also provides an opportunity for my students to learn about sharing with one another and making good choices.
