The days of the classroom being arranged in nice, neat rows where every student is sitting perfectly with their feet under their desk are over! When you give students choices, they will take responsibility for their own learning. Students want to make their own choices about what they are learning, how they are learning it, by whom they are learning it, the pace at which they are learning it, and where they are learning it. These days students crave a voice and choice about almost everything that involves their learning. This includes their classroom environment as well. "An inviting, cozy reading nook serves as a launch pad to the journeys students will travel through books." A big, bright, beautiful rug will become the invitation to the launch pad. Once in, students will nestle down onto the comfy futon or softness of the carpet to prepare for take off! After students return from their expedition, they will want to tell others all about it. They will be able to do this through writing........ using their voice and exciting word choice that will be taught through use of the Write Traits Crate. Mentor texts are used to demonstrate the strongest aspects of writing. In addition to taking off on an author's journey, they will then be able to write the path of their own exploration.
