  • Responsive Reading and Engaged Learning

    Funded Jun 29, 2018

When students begin kindergarten, there is a lot of uncertainty because everything is new. Students are also trying to make friends and begin learning to read. This project has really helped us ease into the school year. With books like I'm New Here and The Name Jar, students have stories they can relate to and allow us to discuss how to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable at school!

The language folder games have been a huge asset to the start of the school year. Kindergarten students all come to school with different amounts of previous knowledge. Some students are learning their letters, while others are already beginning to read. The folder games have been a great way to begin differentiating their activities in a fun and engaging way!

I am very excited to start seeing students reading the First Little Reader books as we get further into the school year! Thank you for all you have done to help us start the school year so smoothly!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Newquist

  • Creating Kindergarten Choices

Our classroom has truly been transformed by this project! Working towards flexible seating, the students have been using the storage bins as their personal cubbies. This is the one space in the room that is only theirs to use. They store their morning journals, unfinished work and papers to take home in these bins. The utility carts have allowed us to store all of our classroom supplies and use everything communally.

When we first used the whiteboards, the class was very excited!! They had some time to draw pictures first and they thought it was really fun to be able to draw something and easily erase what they didn't like. We have now been using these whiteboards to practice writing our letters and high frequency words. The class gets so excited whenever we have a chance to use them!

While my students love the whiteboards and I love the carts that have given us more organization, the speaker is really our favorite addition as a class! My students love to take dance breaks and the speaker has allowed us to quickly and easily have a dance party.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Newquist

I am in my 2nd year teaching 5th grade at a culturally and economically diverse school. My goal is to make my students feel cared for and seen in our classroom. I want to make sure our literature reflects my students experiences and cultures. I also try to make our lessons as fun and student centered as possible to make school and learning something students can look forward to.
