These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. Reading is an every day part of first grade! Each child has a book bag where they store a basal leveled reader and 2 books of choice. This book is used 2-4 times a day!! However, many of the books available for their viewing are not designed for their current level of literacy. This would afford them the opportunity to choose books that are interesting and accessible. The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. I want to blow the doors of reading wide open with exciting books they want to read in both fiction and non fiction. My students literacy is of paramount importance to me and Creating a steady stream of new, age-appropriate books has been shown to nearly triple interest in reading within months. I have chosen books that meet their needs and will provide them with variety, rigor and accessibility for years to come. Additionally, a wonderful thing that comes from literacy in reading is literacy in writing. These books will directly support both reading as a reader and writing as a reader allowing them to develop literacy overall.
