When students enter my counseling office I want them to feel safe and comfortable. My goal with this project is to obtain items that foster communication and set students at ease. I currently have a medium size office with a small couch as well as a table and chairs for small groups. I feel by providing students with more flexible options, it may help them take a much-needed break from that traditional setting they face in their classrooms. Students that come to my office are looking for a space that is going to help them clear their minds and process emotions and feelings. Having an opportunity to calm down in an area that feels safe and secure with curtains and pillows may give them that physical setting they need to accomplish this. The students can also have access to calming activities, such as Newton's cradle and gel fidgets as well as an iPad which would have calming music and guided meditation available. Also, a weighted stuffed dog named Dot would be available to the students. Dot can sit on the lap to provide calming deep pressure for the student. The space would greatly help our students who just need a place to go for a break yet have the counselor be present for when they are ready to talk to someone.
