I hope to create a culture of literacy in my classroom by incorporating opportunities for self-selected reading into my classroom routines and incentive system. Communication is a vital skill in science. I want to model a love of reading and provide space for it within my science classroom. Many of my students are reading below grade level. This is decreasing their potential to succeed in all content area classrooms, as well as their access to future opportunities. During homeroom, transitions, and dismissal there are opportunities to incorporate reading into our routine. Additionally, I would like for self-selected reading time to be a classroom incentive. Not only does this create time for reading, it reframes reading as a reward instead of a chore! My current classroom library selection is narrow, outdated, and inappropriately leveled for my students. I have worked to improve it by bringing books from home and purchasing some. However, I just can't provide the quantity or quality of books my students deserve. I intentionally selected these collections for my students and their needs. A frequent complaint from them is that materials are too "babyish". However, the high interest, low readability collection will provide them with stories that they both can and want to read. The graphic novels are also a great entry point to reading for discouraged students!
