There are so many things that can make a classroom function more smoothly and be more fulfilling to the students. Many of these things are not provided by the school system and are challenging to acquire on a teacher's salary. I have purchased many items for my students over the past few years, including but not limited to: rugs, bookshelves, bean bag chairs, snacks, binders, markers, colored pencils, books, books, and more books!
I want my classroom to be a place that students can feel safe, supported, energized, comfortable, and loved. I am a self-contained 3rd grade teacher and I teach all subjects. Reading is of special importance to me and my classroom is a place where students can explore and expand their growing love of books and reading. I have student desks arranged in groups of four or five for collaborative learning. This is the best type of environment as the students can share background knowledge with classmates to enhance their acquisition of various learning strategies and concepts. At times, this seating arrangement is not optimal, specifically when students have independent reading time or during testing. Privacy folders help students to be less distracted and focus on reading and doing their best. In the past, I have made these folders myself, by taping together two manila folders to form a larger privacy screen. These are flimsy and do not last. These professional privacy shields are durable and will last for several years!
The parents of my students work very hard for their families, but have very little funds to provide supplies for the students. Privacy folders, dry erase boards, composition books, and book bins for our library are items that are needed and used on a daily basis and will support my students in realizing their infinite potential!
